Paper clips have been in use since very long; infact rarely there would has been an individual who would have not used it.  Samuel B. Fay was the first to patent the paper clip in the year 1867 and though there were no marketing efforts in the initial year to promote the use of paper clips still paper clips slowly and steadily gained popularity. 

Plastic paper clips have also been patented in recent years.  The plastic paper clips are available in various shapes, sizes and colors and can be used for different purposes. While making a plastic paper clip its two legs are spread out at an angle of 15 degrees to 20 degrees.  The plastic paper clip is stretched in such a way that the shape which comes out is V in shape; the breadth and the thickness are kept constant throughout the length.  The bending is done in such a way that each part remains separated from the other part.

There are plastic paper clips made out of polyethylene and it is not vulnerable to magnetism and rust.  Due to its arrow shape these paper clips provide a very strong grip and can be used with the same ease with small quantities of paper or large quantities of paper.  These plastic paper clips are available in different colors like red, blue, green, pink, violet, silver etc and are also available in different shapes.

The plastic paper clips do not rust hence it is considered to be the very useful, but it do make indentation in the paper hence it is generally not preferred for archival materials.
